Cleansing the Psyche : Step One : Negation
Reflection, who has time? Repression, emotions, what? Trusting one’s own intuition and really listening to those parts of you which may be otherwise ignored due to the fact that they may rock the boat. I challenge you to find anyone not stewing in a vat of self doubt. When do we realize we are over stimulated and under evaluated? Are we capable of maintaining any individual characteristics while submitting to the collective? What makes us unique? Society pushes us to join the collective insanity by worshiping our celebs and athletes. Make sure everyone knows what team you root for, because that in some way helps define you, right? There is no need to be bored when you can fill your mind and time with completely numbing reality tv, cooking shows, and for the intellectual we have the discovery channel, but before you pickup that remote maybe you should consider what it may be doing to your unconscious mind. The fact that 5 minutes of tv sends your brain into an Alpha brainwave state is completely horrifying when you realize the entirety of that situation. Please do some research and I promise you will see why they call it tv programming. For those looking for some more challenging scenarios might we offer some video games, or how about the stair master. However this post is not intended to dissuade anyone addicted to those forms of self minimization, this is a discussion for anyone who like to get a little more out of life than that. There are many forms of escapism. The average person today uses entertainment, consumerism, and most probably some form of self medication, and why not? Isn’t that what you do when you are sick? I propose we are all sick, and could benefit greatly from spending some time denying our collective tendencies and getting a handle on our own individuality and purpose. First we need to do some spring cleaning and take out the trash.
I am currently in the process of negation, why? you might ask. Well good question, have you ever reacted in a way that you immediately realized is not in line with your position, purchased something you don’t need, or even assumed someone else’s positions as if they were your own. I submit to you that you may not be in control of your own emotions and quite possibly may not be responsible for your prejudices, opinions, or even aspirations? I know the ramifications are daunting, but must be examined. We all agree we are products of our environment, right? Huh, well does that not imply something profound? As I look around at the maniacal situations people put themselves into day by day, I often wonder if they even know why it is they do what they do. Am I overreacting, of course they do, right? I am sure they all want to be completely marginalized, emotionally and spiritually drained, and stressed out most of the time. I mean how else are you going to get that ipod, a cool phone, and any other trivial fad presented. People expose themselves willingly to endless cycles mediocre, mundane activities. They are continuously forced to comply to ridiculous rules, while being bombarded with sophisticated behavior modification techniques daily. Not to mention the fact that they also have had almost every major decision made for them, minus the color of course, for what? Do we even know what would happen if we were free to make up our own minds. Maybe it is better that almost every conversation is taken to the lowest common denominator. Most people could not even tell you what is missing from their lives, besides a laundry list of material possessions. What is the reward for all this compromise? It seems strange that the majority of our time is spent earning money to spend on a prefabricated life, follow the yellow brick road and all the dreams we made for you will come true. Seldom does anyone break rank due to the fact that there is almost zero opportunity to get out of the hive without tremendous backlash and denigration. I know what you are thinking, I have a nice house, cool car, and a 401K that will take care of me in retirement, yeah so does everyone else. I wonder how much authentic experience and creativity is wasted perpetuating this lifestyle. Is it enough to live vicariously through our people’s champions on the silver screen? Are we degrading ourselves by not verifying, or at the very least examining whether or not we are being led into a life we have not chosen, and mostly void of meaning. It is no secret that the tv and other media is specifically designed to sell to the masses, the herd, or the hive. I love those words because I noticed that when you lump people in to those categories during conversation they will always deny it and exalt their free thinking independent mind, haha. When do people realize the absolute power of identification and collectivism. I always find it funny when even my pseudo-intellectual, atheist, liberal friends who are so concerned with the state of things, and have opinions that are so defined and concrete, don’t even realize they have not come to their beliefs on their own. They have merely taken them off them of the proverbial clothing rack, in much the same way as you purchase an outfit. If any of this seems misguided, I challenge you to spark a friendly conversation with some of your more informed friends and keep track of how much time it takes before they are spewing talking points from their respective faction. Holy shit, has anyone actually examined themselves enough to know whether or not there is one unique thought in your whole brain, because I have to be honest when I say it’s doubtful.
The process of negation is extremely critical to an authentic life. I believe the first step in a process like this is a simple choice, you must choose to spend some time examining your habits, jobs, and for sure relationships just to figure what is trully fulfilling and what is not. You have to deny yourself the crutches and handrails that are so easily accesible. While you are looking deeper at your life try to be aware of hidden trauma, fears, or pressures related to these parts of your external life, These are the little critters that need to be dealt with, but not immediately, first just try to recognize them and how they change your mood, actions, or reactions. Habits are easy to identify so are probably the best place to start. We all need to achieve the chemical divorce, not implying anything more than the suspicious chemicals we are addicted to spawning from the hypothalamus, This is as simple as trying to be mindful of my every thought in order to verify its origin, understanding yourself should be every one’s goal because in the end it may be the only thing you are truly entitled to change. The human being is the most studied, categorized, and minimized creature walking this planet. Most of us can probably tell you how entice or coerce a child into performing some act they are not inclined to do otherwise, it is part of raising a child, yet the vast majority deny the possibility that we could be manipulated in the same way. Science, big business, and governments all over the world are spending endless time and dollars to figure what makes you tick. I think it’s time we started doing the same. Imagine giving up all of your assumptions and beliefs in order to achieve the unthinkable, a new awakening, the opportunity to see things hidden from you due to the overarching stagnation created by strict beliefs and concrete ideologies. We all need some psychic sovereignty, because I promise there are endless minions out hellbent on doing the thinking for you! Whenever a one size fits all belief system if assumed, we must realize that all the thinking has already been done by someone else. This is not an attack but a plea for individual integrity. Just like any other logical problem the process of negation starts with reduction. Reduction to first matter…
